Why Alive HR?

Posted on Tuesday, March 9th, 2010 by Krista Ogburn Francis 3 Comments Comments

The former HRart is now Alive HR. Why did I change the name, inquiring minds want to know. And why does my URL not match the name of my blog? Good questions, and I’ll get to the whole kamaletalent thing another time. But for the moment, I want to focus on just the new blog title.

As human resources professionals, we often talk about passion in the workplace.  We want engaged employees. As we interview, we seek out energy and excitement that will sustain an employee during the tough or tedious times. We want a workforce that is alive.

By the same token, the workplace also need HR professionals to be alive. Employees need leadership to be awake, astute and on the move.

Sometimes I wonder, though, if we forget that the need for engagement goes both ways.  In my opinion, passion starts with us, Human Resource professionals and leaders. We can’t be disconnected, sluggish, negative, complacent jaded, resistant to learning and change–and then expect employees who act in opposite ways.

Here are some things that make me feel alive:

  • The perfect interview or resume. Not the perfect meeting or the perfect document, but interaction from the person I know is perfect for the role, our company, the team, the opportunity. Walking on Sunshine starts to play in my mind like an HR movie soundtrack!
  • Similarly, meeting or talking with Rockstar talent. I go home on such a  high, singing I Gotta Feeling!
  • Riding my motor scooter to work–exhilarating!
  • Learning something. Anything. Social media, mediation, WordPress, beginning HTML.
  • Helping employees and managers work out difficult issues. Feels so good!
  • Knowing that what I do makes a positive difference to our clientele, our friends who have intellectual and other developmental disabilities.

These moments give my job meaning and energy to sustain me through the less exciting times, all the difficult decisions and conversations.

What makes you come alive?

  • Krista-
Congrats on the new Blog spot and a really great post. Things that make me feel alive are: Inspiring People, Great music, Relaxing time with husband and family, giving back to those less fortunate, and being thankful for all I have been given.
    And of course, your friendship!

  • Hi Krista,

My name is Kevin Kestler and I am the Digital Media Strategist for mojoLive.

After reading through Alive HR, I feel that you are someone who would truly “get” what we’re trying to do. If it’s alright with you, and if it is a good fit for your audience, I’d like to speak with you a little more about mojoLive and see if you would be interested in helping us shed light on what we believe will be a major shift in the way people view and manage their careers. Here’s a quick peek at what we’re doing:

mojoLive is a truly fulfilling career management platform. We believe that the current state of the hiring process is far from ideal and propose that the solution lies in employee empowerment. We wish to enable employees to represent themselves to peers and employers in a way that is far more expressive than a simple résumé and far more useful than a just burgeoning network of loose professional acquaintances. We are currently in a limited private beta, but are beginning to expand our user base and are constantly on the lookout for like-minded influencers in the career management space.

If you’re interested in finding out more about mojoLive, I’d be happy to go into more detail via email, over the phone, or I could arrange a walk-through webinar so you can get a better idea of where we are and where we hope to go. In the meantime, please feel free to browse the site at mojolive.com or blog.mojolive.com for more information about us. I look forward to speaking with you soon!

    Cheers!

  • Dear Krista Ogburn Francis,

My colleague Erin Palmer at Bisk Education previously guest posted for your blog (http://www.kamaletalent.com/tips-for-adjusting-to-a-promotion/), and I was wondering if you would accept another guest post from us.

I work on behalf of the University of Vermont’s sustainable innovation online programs. We would love to write a post for your site related to sustainability in the workplace or specifically in Human Resources. May I send you a more specific topic idea for your consideration?

I look forward to your reply!

    With gratitude,

    Jessica Edmondson
