What if we had to recertify degrees?

This post was inspired by the post “Is Becoming PHR or SPHR Certified Critical?” by Rich DeMatteo on Lance Haun’s Rehaul blog.
One of Lance’s points was that passing an exam doesn’t indicate retention of knowledge. In my own comment, I suggested that I have not retained a lot of the content I learned in college; yet the exercise of obtaining a degree was valuable beyond the diploma itself.
Dawn Hrdlica (@dawnHRrocks) went on to comment that part of the value of achieving certification lies in the requirement for continuing education credits needed to maintain one’s status.
These three points together made me think: what if we all needed to obtain a certain number of CEU’s to maintain our BS, MA, or PhD? How would that change the face of higher education? Or of life after college? The workplace? Various professions?
What do you think? Let me know.

Glad you enjoyed the guest post today on Rehaul!
CEU’s I think would make life tough. Maybe it would reinforce the work force, and keep people knowledgeable, but life itself is time consuming, and not everyone can afford the cost or time commitment.
Again, appreciated your comment on my guest post!

This is a very interesting topic. I have been in HR for many years, a degree, and I have a lot of “street smarts”. I have thought a lot about certification. What does it mean? Does it make you a more rounded professional?
I do not think certification should or does define someone. It is a combination of skills, qualifications, and experience that makes you a great HR professional.
@Shennee–the HRBartender has a great post about certification” http://www.hrbartender.com/
@Rich, thanks for your comment. I am not in favor of making people take CEU’s to maintain their degree status. But it’s interesting to think of the implications and ripple effects, including the ones you mention. Not to mention fewer people would go to college in the first place.
